Gave a friend a ride home tonight, who in turn was giving a ride to one of his friends, which, by power of deduction, meant so was I. Now I should say, I have been asked questions about my car before, including some dumb questions, some ridiculous/funny questions, and a couple tacky questions. But this friend-of-a-friend seemed very curious about one thing:
"Why didn't you buy a pickup instead?"
He wasn't kidding, either. He basically kept saying that yeah, it's a nice car, but wouldn't I prefer a truck? What was it about this that I liked better? Couldn't I get, like, a really nice truck for the same amount of money?
I actually had no clue how to respond to that, which was, as I said, a first. I actually started to try to justify it, but then I caught myself.

I know right
This is a truck I might actually take instead of my car. Probably not to drive everyday, but dammit I love old Internationals.

more luxurious, faster, less fuel, and you less like a redneck driving one :P

I know the feeling. In this part of the country, and especially in my line of work, bro-trucks are de rigueur. As in EVERYONE has one.
"Why'ont chu just git'chu a truck?" is something I hear a lot.
My next vehicle is likely to be something just as polar opposite to that as every other car I've owned.
What do you drive, BTW?

Yeah, but the kid has a truck. I didn't want to be a total dick.
I basically finally told him (in a more polite way) that I liked my car, and if I'd wanted a truck, I would've gotten a truck. I'm pretty sure he actually liked the car, but it was just a really weird series of questions.

What do you drive/are you getting?

Good choice.
"Why'ont chu just git'chu a truck?"
"Because I don't want one" is what I usually say.

They probably don't know the depreciated value of older Audi's. They probably don't realize that for that price, you aren't getting anything special in the truck market. Would I have gotten a truck in that price range? Probably. But I can definitely see the appeal of your car. I would definitely take something like that as a second car, or daily and truck be the second car. Still, my opinion has no right to control your opinion.

Someone once said "bro you could've got a used Civic Si on bags for that much..."

I have a 2006 WRX. The only "good" thing about it (in truck-speak) is that I've had my car off-road more than 90% of the trucks I see.
I'm still a ways off from buying again (next spring or summer, probably), but I've considered everything from Caymans and RX7s to just keeping it simple and getting a new STI. No matter what I get, I'll hear the same thing:
"Man, you spent how much for that little car? You know what kinda truck you coulda got for that?"
I have actually considered a truck from time to time, but the truth is, I can't fit anything but a short bed regular cab in my garage (and just barely). I refuse to own anything I'm forced to park in my driveway when I have a perfectly good garage. That, and they're just not that fun to drive.

While it might be fast enough for that, I went down a different route.
Friend was only wearing the lap half of his seatbelt, so at one point I slammed on the brakes and did a panic stop from about 35mph. ABS and big tires worked like a charm, and I essentially gave my friend the Heimlich maneuver. The other kid (after they both calmed down) basically said, "Woah, my truck can't do that."
Let that be a lesson to you. Buy a sedan. The brakes could one day save your choking friend.

90% of the time tbe tool asking that question has a RWD truck, so I usually tell them they could have bought a real truck as well.
